Nigerian
designer, Duro Olowu presented his Fall 2011 collection at the just
concluded 2011 New York Fashion Week. Titled “Urban Gaucho,” the
collection was inspired by the style of South American Gauchos, as well
as by the work of Harlem Renaissance photographer James Van Der Zee.
This was Olowu’s first
season showing in New York.
“I was influenced by gaucho – but not literal. More of a gaucho
spirit,” Olowu said in a recent conversation with the Wall Street
Journal. “Women want to look confident, still feminine, but confident.”
Olowu’s collection was a mix of prints with plaids, florals with stripes as well as contrasting textures and vivid colors.
